Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology (Volume 2)

by Sumita Mehta, Shalini Rajaram, Neerja Goel

The book ‘Advances in Obstetrics and Gynecology Volume 2’ updates practicing gynecologists in this ever- changing field of medicine on a wide variety of topics, makes concepts clearer and gives evidence based practices wherever applicable. The current thinking on the etiology of fetal growth restriction has somersaulted and we need to look at it in new light as outlined in the chapter. Likewise several new concepts have been added to the armamentarium of management strategies in pregnant diabetics and recent studies support the safety of oral hypoglycemics such as glyburide in pregnancy. Atosiban an oxytocin receptor antagonist is now widely used for preterm labor in the UK and Europe and appears to have the best safety profile and Chapter 3 comprehensively reviews the same. Demand for labor analgesia is increasing and an update on the topic along with intrapartum fetal surveillance is discussed. Cord blood banking is a recent trend and stem cell therapy for many diseases is now a reality that we need to keep abreast of. Management guidelines for multiple pregnancy, VBAC, PPH and HIV; commonly encountered conditions in day-to-day practice have also been comprehensively dealt with. Development of new potent progestin’s and their use in hormonal contraceptives have given the modern women freedom from frequent cycles, with an added advantage of reducing side effects such as acne and weight gain. Infertility is a problem that gynecologists face frequently and no other field has witnessed such strides in technology and the chapters on ultrasonography in infertility and ART provide the reader with new insights. Gynecologists have a pivotal role to play in the detection of breast abnormalities, reassuring patients and treating some of the benign breast disorders. Recent developments in the management of other gynecologic malignancies have also been addressed. With link between HPV and cervical cancer being established, the time has come for routine use of prophylactic HPV vaccination for the prevention of cervical cancer and the chapter deals with nuances of currently available vaccines.
