Recently there have been many developments to make hormonal contraceptives more acceptable with less side effects. Continuous use combined oral contraceptive pills have been introduced to decrease number of menstrual cycles thus reducing side effects associated with hormone withdrawal. Newer progestin’s have been developed to decrease androgenic side effects and progestin only pill containing desogestrel is effective and inhibits ovulation. Other newer progestin’s drospirenone an antimineralocorticoid and Nestorone (NES) a potent progestin with no androgenic, antiandrogenic and glucocorticoid activities and their contraceptive uses are discussed in detail. Monthly injectable combined contraceptives offer less bleeding and faster return to fertility than DMPA. Weekly transdermal hormonal contraceptive patch (ethinyl estradiol and norelgestromin) is very well tolerated except for skin irritation as is the vaginal ring (NuvaRing). Levonorgestrel releasing Intrauterine device (Mirena) has already been in use not only for contraception, but also for treatment of DUB, dysmenorrhoea, postmenopausal hormonal therapy. New subcutaneous implants have been introduced with fewer rods and will be dealt with in detail.
