Abstract

Increasing life expectancy has led to an increasingly elderly population. Now women may spend a third of their lives in the estrogen deficit postmenopausal state. The average age of menopause is 50 ± 2 years and it has been estimated that 10–40% of all women are symptomatic. Of these only 25% seek medical care. Hormone therapy (HT) has been used in menopause related symptoms. However, there has been a change leading to a negative attitude by both professionals and lay public toward HT in the past 5 years. This chapter has discussed each symptom of menopause along with evidence based management in a comprehensive manner. It also enumerates current guidelines for use of HT preparations along with their routes and dosages of various regimens in detail. Besides HT other therapies used in menopause have been discussed in detail. Apprehension of readers regarding HT and various cancer has been discussed in detail along with other potential risks to enable justified use of HT.
