Abstract

It is estimated that among newborns with perinatally acquired HIV, approximately 60% become infected during labor and delivery. Most guidelines recommend that women with HIV-1 RNA > 1000 copies/mL in the third trimester of pregnancy should be counselled on the potential benefits of elective cesarean delivery.
