Abstract

HIV antibody testing (ELISA and Western blot analysis) is not useful in the early neonatal period, because of the transplacental transfer of maternal HIV IgG antibodies into fetal circulation. Definitive HIV testing for the infant and children less than 18 months of age should employ specific virologic assays, (HIV DNA PCR, or HIV RNA PCR), and a positive test should be confirmed with repeat testing.
