Abstract

Antiretroviral therapy for HIV-infected pregnant women consists of combination therapy with three or more antiretroviral medications, typically two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) plus a protease inhibitor (PI) or non nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). The preferred dual NRTI backbone consists of zidovudine combined with lamivudine most often given as the fixed-drug preparation. The preferred PI is ritonavir boosted lopinavir. The use of efavirenz should be avoided during pregnancy. Various concerns should be taken into consideration while using HAART in pregnant women.
