Abstract

Strength and muscle endurance are the two attributes of muscular fitness. There are number of factors that determine strength of a muscle which are discussed at the beginning of the chapter. ZOOM IN throws light on an important but often neglected aspect \"Mind does matter!\" Then the chapter takes you through the Types of strength viz. Maximum strength and Explosive strength. Measurement of muscle strength is an important aspect of fitness evaluation. You are introduced to a variety of procedures to measure Muscle strength. These are Dynamometry, Cable tensiometry, One Repetition Maximum (1RM), Using computerized equipment and Isokinetic dynamometer. There are a number of myths surrounding the practice of weight training. The MYTHS dispelled in this section are \"Resistance training is meant only for athletes and body builders”. \"Children should not be engaged in weight training”. In order to make good progress, you have to train each muscle group every day and \"Weight training makes a person muscle bound”. The last part of chapter deals with Guidelines for strength training including pre-exercise evaluation of muscular fitness. A passing note is made about two lesser understood training modalities viz. Plyometric training and Circuit resistance training. Mechanism of Delayed onset muscle soreness is discussed in order to get insight into the phenomenon. The chapter ends with description of Measurement of muscle endurance and Guidelines for evaluation of muscular fitness.
