Abstract

Operative dentistry is the field of dental practice concerned with restoration of parts of the teeth that are defective as a result of disease, trauma, or abnormal development. It plays an important role to develop a state of normal function, health, and esthetics of an individual. It was introduced by Father of Operative Dentistry, Dr. GV Black, with the philosophy of “extension for prevention”. However with the advancements in instruments and materials, the philosophy introduced by Dr. GV Black changed to “prevention of extension” and minimally invasive dentistry. This concept has opened new doors for further improvements and advances in the field of Restorative Dentistry.
