Abstract

Dental caries is an ecological disease in which the diet, the host and the microbial flora interact over a period of time in order to encourage demineralization of the tooth enamel with resultant caries formation. Tooth decay is caused by specific types of acid-producing bacteria that cause damage in the presence of fermentable carbohydrates such as sucrose, fructose, and glucose. Until recently almost everyone had experienced tooth decay in their lifetime. However, today many people are caries free and there has been a 40–60% reduction in the incidence of tooth decay around the Western world. Good dental awareness amongst individuals and recent advances in diagnosis, prevention and management of dental caries are mainly responsible for dramatic reduction in the prevalence of dental caries.
