Abstract

A wide variety of dental instruments are used in dentistry today to allow the operator to: thoroughly examine the health status of the oral cavity; manually remove decay, as well as smooth, finish, and prepare tooth structure to be restored back to its normal function; place, condense, and carve a dental material to the original anatomy of the tooth structure. These can be hand or rotary cutting instruments. Rotary instruments help in gross cutting and final refining of the preparation, whereas, hand instruments are used for examination, producing minor details of tooth preparation and for insertion, compaction and finishing of the restoration.
