Abstract

Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) is a hypersensitivity disease of the lungs virtually always related to Aspergillus fumigatus. This disease is seen in patients who have cystic fibrosis or poorly controlled asthma. The natural history is that of chronic immunologic, clinical, and radiologic episodes of relapse and remission. Therapy for ABPA involves prophylaxis against and treatment of acute exacerbations, as well as prevention of end-stage fibrotic disease. The disease is often undiagnosed for several years, and this may result in the development of permanent lung damage before appropriate therapy is initiated.
