Pediatric Surgery: Diagnosis and Management (2 Volumes)

The proposal from the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (IAPS) to publish a multi-authored pediatric surgery book that was complete in all respects and still affordable, was quite a challenge. The Editor accepted this responsibility to bring out a book that would be of international quality, high in scientific value and still low in cost. The initial concept for the book was to include many pediatric surgical sub-specialties, e.g. General Pediatric Surgery, Neonatal Surgery, Pediatric Oncology, Pediatric Urology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and others, all in a single book. However, since the contents became too voluminous, this book was restricted to “Pediatric Surgery— Diagnosis and Management”, primarily to cover general pediatric surgery; yet still these required two volumes to keep the book handy. The scope of the book remains very broad and covers the spectrum of General Pediatric Surgery. It includes some relevant basic science, embryology and pathophysiology, diagnosis and management, as well as complications and includes long-term results. The descriptions and pictures of operative procedures have also been added wherever indicated. Many subjects have been covered by more than one expert still without duplicating the text. The book with about 1200 figures (Clinical photographs, flow charts, X-rays and the ones drawn by the artist) makes it unique. The book also includes chapters on Nanotechnology, Minimal invasive procedures, Endoscopic procedures, Lasers, Robotic surgery, Stem cell regeneration, Tissue engineering, Computers and Molecular genetics to offer state-of-the-art information to the pediatric surgical community. The book also extends to adolescent surgery as it includes the chapters on Empyema, Intestinal obstruction, Bariatric surgery, Tuberculosis, Hydatid disease and Bezoars. The book would serve its purpose if it reaches the pediatric surgical community in the developed and the developing world alike, for its scientific contents, quality of production, affordability and balanced approach.
