Abstract

Dancing has formed an important cultural aspect of many societies in Africa (Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt etc.), Gulf countries (Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon), and Europe (Spain, Greece and Turkey) since time immemorial. The term \"belly dancing\" has been used traditionally since ancient times, as it is believed that all the movements during this dance are centered on the belly, which is believed to be the creative center for human beings since human life begins in the belly. Belly dancing has, for thousands of years, been known as the \'dance of fertility\' or \'the birth dance\' or \'the earth dance\' because of its connection with feminine sexuality and sensuality, birth and the menstrual cycle. Unlike the name, which suggests that this dance mainly involves movements of the belly, movements of the hips and lower back form the major elements of this dance. Dancing as an activity helps in keeping the person fit. This chapter shows that deeper mental involvement in dance movements through the practice of belly dancing proves to be an important exercise for the pregnant woman and has many advantages. It can be considered as an ideal form of prenatal form of exercise. Belly dancing is a perfect exercise for women. It encourages suppleness and strength, fitness and co-ordination. This chapter shows linkage between belly dancing and child-birth and advantages of belly dancing. This chapter also shows the role of music therapy in pregnancy and child-birth.
