Abstract

Through the knowledge of neurons and nervous system, psychologists are increasing their understanding of biological basis of human behavior. This unit traces the ways in which the biological structures and functions of the body affect human behavior. It involves the body-mind interaction of the various bodily factors which comprise of the sensory organs, muscles, glands and nervous system. Major structures of the nervous system; the hypothalamus, limbic system, cerebrum, mid-brain, cerebellum, medulla, pons, spinal cord and peripheral nervous system and their integrative function have been detailed in this unit. The individual functions at three levels, conscious, preconscious and unconscious have also been covered with special focus on causes for abnormal behavior and the interrelation and the interaction of the body and the mind. How much of our behavior is due to heredity (nature) and how much is due to environment (nurture) and the interplay between these two forces is also well detailed.
