Abstract

One of the most important characteristics of human beings is their capacity to learn. This unit begins with nature of learning, learning process, types of learning, purposes, factors influencing learning and law of learning. Learning is a consequence of trial and error, rewarding circumstances, conditioning, perceptive and cognitive processes. Various theories dealt in this unit include the trial and error theory of learning, classical conditioning and operant conditioning theories that interpret learning in terms of connection between stimuli and response. Insightful and observational learning theories emphasize the role of purpose, insight, understanding, reasoning and other cognitive factors in the process of learning. In this unit special emphasis is given on learning during illness, role of a nurse and nursing implications of learning, techniques of effective study for a student nurse and studying for examination. Detailed notes have been given on types, factors, theories and educational implications of transfer of learning.
