The chapter begins with the principles of colorimetry, it discusses Lambert’s law. Described next are components of a photometer. Sample collection and appropriate additives are mentioned in adequate detail. Control sera are covered briefly. Given in detail are the testing protocols, normal values and the reasons of getting abnormal values of the following tests. Blood urea. Creatinine, Bilirubin, Albumin, Cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, Triglycerides, Glucose, Uric acid, Calcium, Phosphorus, Chloride, Iron and TIBC, Trace elements (Zinc, copper, magnesium). Given thereafter is the importance of automation. Also given is which lab needs what degree of automation. A few commercially available systems are presented for understanding. All principles of quality assurance in clinical chemistry are presented nicely. Enzymes, though, are covered in the next chapter.
