Abstract

Whole of the mammary gland except the Tail of Spence lies superficial to the deep fascia. Mammary gland presents superficial and deep surfaces and consists of glandular, fibrous and fatty tissue. It is compound tubulo-alveolar type of gland belonging to apocrine variety. Lymphatic drainage of the gland is important as the spread of malignancy of cancer depends on the lymphatic channels and the groups of lymphnodes involved. Commonest site of malignancy of the breast is the upper and outer quadrant. However the most dangerous quadrant of the gland is the lower and the medial from where the spread of cancer reaches the liver and the ovary.
