The Short Textbook of Pediatrics

by Suraj Gupte

This first and the foremost pediatric textbook from the Indian subcontinent, nay the South-east Asia Region (SEAR), was first released at the 15th International Congress of Pediatrics held in New Delhi, India, way back in 1977 by Turkey’s father figure and world authority in pediatrics, Prof Dogramaci, the President of the International Pediatric Association. Over the past decades, it has gone from strength to strength and earned a pride of place among the flagships in the medical literature. The 11th edition stands out as the most state-of-the-art, profusely-illustrated, comprehensive and reader-friendly with special emphasis on the priority problems of the resource-limited countries. The goal is to provide a blend of time-honored concepts and recommendations with new advances. The particular stress is on meeting the needs of the intended readers. The book is divided into nine major parts beginning with the \"Core pediatrics\", which forms the backbone of this venture. Its as many as 46 chapters, contributed by a multitude of national and international faculty, are a spotlight on the current pediatric scenario with an eye on future. Each chapter is provided at the fag-end with a key bibliography incorporating references of useful articles/chapters in books or journals plus books/monographs exclusively dealing with the topic. This could be of immense assistance to the readers looking for additional information. A large number of clinical and other illustrations plus algorithms, tables and boxes are its strong point. A constellation of simple, straight-forward and absorbing style, evidence-based information, and easy-to-understand language are it’s another hallmark unmatched by any other pediatric textbook. Yet another plus point of the treatise is the detailed and comprehensive “Contents” and “Index” which ensure retrieval of the information quickly. Warmly recommended by a multitude of national and international periodicals and authorities, the book is addressed to medical students (both undergraduates and postgraduates), residents, practicing pediatricians and general practitioners dealing with children as well. Even senior pediatricians and teachers of pediatrics shall find a great deal of information of interest to them.
