Abstract

It is customary for many children suffering from orthopedic problems to first report to the pediatrician for advice. Naturally, a reasonable knowledge of the field assists the pediatrician in decision-making and referring the patient to an orthopedic surgeon. To begin with , the Chapter deals with congenital deficiencies of long bones (phocomelia, hemimelia, Amelia), club foot, false foot, radial club hand, polydactyly, syndactyly, congenital constriction bands, congenital pseudarthrosis of tibia, dislocation of patella, knock knee (genu valgum), bow legs (genu varum), cleidocranial dysostosis, slipped capital femoral epiphysis, developmental dysplasia of the hip, scoliosis and kyphosis. Thereafter are discussed genetic skeletal dysplasias (osteogenesis imperfect, Marfan syndrome, arthrogryposis multiplex congenital, achondroplasia, pseudoachondroplasia), osteopetrosis, osteochondritis, lib length discrepancy, child abuse and neglects, infections/inflammations of bones and joints and bone tumors. Towards the conclusion is dealt the relatively new but very important topic of “Sports medicine”. Its importance for the pediatrician lies in the fact that many a times specific advice from the pediatrician becomes mandatory regarding the magnitude of restriction, type of recommended sport activity and fitness for return to normal activity and participation in sports.
