Learning the technique and developing skill in actually carrying out the frequently employed practical procedures, some diagnostic while others therapeutic, is important for all pediatricians. Most of these procedures can be carried out bedside in addition to the procedure room. The Chapter first takes up the important general rules in pediatric practical procedures. For instance, before actually doing the procedure, salient features of the procedure should be explained to the attendants and to the grownup child to ensure their cooperation. For all major procedures such as lumbar procedure, liver biopsy and bone marrow aspiration, it is obligatory to obtain written signed consent from the parents. The are discussed “restraint and positioning”, parenteral injections and infusions, venesection, umbilical catheterization, bone marrow aspiration, lumbar puncture, subdural puncture/tap, ventricular tap, thoracentesis, pericardial puncture, abdominal paracentesis, suprapubic bladder aspiration, heel puncture, liver biopsy, kidney biopsy, lymph node biopsy, fine needle aspiration, gastric lavage, manual removal of foreign body from airway, and cardiac resuscitation, etc. Towards conclusion, an update is available on different aspects of assisted ventilation–mechanical ventilation provision for oxygenation of circulation in order to maintain gaseous concentration and pH of blood at an optimal level in the event of respiratory failure.
