Drug administration in infants and children is not the same as in adults. On account of wide variation in weight and surface area as the child grows, the dose has got to be generally based on child’s weight and sometime on surface area. Furthermore, dosage is different in newborns. Even in newborns, his status as term or preterm as also weight needs to be borne in mind before calculation for dose is made. Moreover, all drugs recommended for adults may not be appropriate in case of pediatric subjects. In this chapter, important drugs along with trade names and dosage are listed in alphabetic order. Drugs in alphabetic order “A” include acetaminophen, acetazolamide, acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), ACTH, acyclovir, adrenaline (epinephrine), albendazole, albumin, albuterol, allopurinol, alprostadil, aluminium hydroxide, amikacin, aminophylline, aminosidine sulfate, amitriptyline, amodiaquine, amoxicillin, amoxicillin with clavulanic acid (co-amoxiclav), ampicillin, ascorbic acid, astemizole, atenolol, atropine sulfate, azathioprine, and azithromycin. Alphabetic order ”D” includes dantrolene, dexamethasone, domperidone, dopamine, etc. In alphabetic order “M” is incorporated such drugs as mannitol, mefenamic acid, methyldopa, metoclopramide, minoxidil, mustine hydrochloride, etc. Examples of drugs under alphabetic order “X” and “Z” is xylometazoline and zidovudine and zinc, respectively.
