Abstract

This chapter begins with an overview of the scientific basis of antituberculosis treatment including the need to use multiple drugs for prolonged periods. Current recommendations for standard regimens are presented. The rationale behind intermittent treatment is covered in great detail. Evolution of short-course chemotherapy regimens is traced. The terminology of standard antituberculosis regimens is clarified. Efficacy of various treatment regimens in smear positive TB, smear-negative TB and extrapulmonary TB are presented. The definition of adverse events due to antituberculosis treatment and monitoring for these are explained. Treatment of TB in HIV/AIDs patients is also covered.
