Abstract

This new entity called PANDAS is characterized by acute onset of motor abnormality (Tics) and behavior abnormality (Obsessive compulsive disorder) among children in their first decade and possibly precipitated by Group A beta-hemolytic streptococcal infection. The underlying mechanism is immunological and has been substantiated by microbiological and serological study, neuroimaging evidences and post mortem brain biopsy. However, there are cases with similar clinical presentation without any evidence of infection. Hence this entity is still not firmly established. Possibly there is underlying a genetic predisposition since ‘PANDAS’ is commonly seen in families with history of tics and obsessive compulsive disorder. The authors have nicely described this condition.
