Abstract

Local anaesthetic drugs are specifically used for the purpose of nerve blocks. They mostly act by producing a reversible block to the transmission of a nerve impulse in a peripheral nerve. They contain either an amide or an ester intermediate chain linking an aromatic group to an amine group. Amide local anaesthetics are metabolized in liver and the ester drugs are broken down rapidly by plasma cholinesterases.
