Abstract

This chapter discusses postoperative complications in detail. Early complications during perioperative period, fluid and electrolyte imbalance, hemorrhage, phlebothrombosis and pulmonary embolism, wound complications, neurological complications, and foreign bodies, are some topics discussed in detail. It is unusual to find high grade sepsis in an elective surgery patient but in an emergency situation with septic abortion or postpartum sepsis patient may suffer. In mildly anemic subjects blood transfusion should be avoided though arranged. Instead surgery should be carefully, quickly and gently performed to minimize blood loss and tissue damage. Intra-abdominal hemorrhage can be massive presenting as abdominal pain which either localizes to lower abdomen or becomes generalized. In this case, mass is localized with well defined boundaries or takes a definitive route of extension except for retroperitoneal hemorrhage which occurs quickly to produce shock.
