Abstract

This chapter discusses the future of gynecological surgery in detail. The major areas of gynecological surgery today are obstetrics, fertility enhancing surgeries and assisted reproduction, oncosurgery, and gynecologic urosurgery. Advances in computer graphics, robotics and virtual reality (VR) technology have opened up new possibilities in medicine. Advances in telecommunications have allowed surgeons to view operations taking place in distant hospitals using videoconference techniques. Robotic assisted laparoscopic surgery, virtual reality training systems, intelligent operating rooms, and newer optics, have enabled easy gynecological surgery procedures. Smaller microlaparoscopes and microinstrumentation coupled with video-laparoscopy enables the patient to be an integral part of the operation and interact with the surgeon during the laparoscopy. Work on mapping of pain associated with the endometriotic lesions has allowed patient can determine pain where the microscopic endometriosis is, so the surgeon can remove it along with the visible lesion.
