Abstract

This chapter discusses various aspects of suture and choice with abdominal wall closures in gynecologic procedure. Types of abdominal incisions include vertical incision, transverse incision, pfannenstiel incision, transverse incision, cherney incision, and maylard incision. Choosing the correct suture requires knowledge of the healing characteristics of tissues and understanding of the physical properties of various suture materials. The ability of the suture to retain tensile strength is necessary where the suture should be used in wound closure. Surgical gut sutures can be used to reapproximate mucosal surfaces or peritoneal edges. Some investigators recommend the use of nonabsorbable sutures, polypropylene or polybutester, to close the fascia in a midline abdominal incision. A study by van\'t Riet in year 2002 found no difference in incisional hernia rates between delayed absorbable sutures and nonabsorbable sutures.
