Abstract

This chapter discusses various surgical methods of abortions. The methods discussed include dilatation and curettage/evacuation, manual vacuum aspiration (MVA), abdominal hysterectomy, modified radical hysterectomy, vaginal hysterectomy, and the ten step vaginal hysterectomy. Vaginal hysterectomy for genital prolapse is an inherently simple operation if the surgeon follows good surgical principles and has a thorough knowledge of pelvic anatomy. Technical minutiae of vaginal hysterectomy include reaching and opening of the vesicouterine fold of the peritoneum and when the uterus is enlarged or occasionally there is no mobility in spite of securing the cardinal ligaments, Clamping, cutting, and ligating the uterosacral and mackenrodt’s ligaments when the descent is poor and the space inadequate and securing the angles of the vaginal incision separately and in the most secure manner possible is also mandatory.
