Abstract

This chapter presents an overview of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) procedures for the management of all forms of infertility. These ART procedures include ovarian stimulation, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), oocyte retrieval, embryo transfer, and luteal phase support. For oocyte donation using in vitro techniques, cycle synchronization between the donor and recipient is essential as oocyte retrieval and subsequent embryo transfer has to be done at an appropriate stage of endometrial development in the recipient. In laser assisted hatching, laser energy at the focal point is absorbed by the tissue water and macromolecules resulting in disruption of the matrix and ablation. Laser can also be used during ICSI for sperm injection where it prevents excessive cell deformation during injection or for carrying out biopsy procedures for PGD.
