This chapter discusses analgesia for obstetrics and postoperative case principles in detail. Pain during labor, ideal pain relief, non-pharmacological methods, use of inhalational anesthetic agents such as nitrous oxide, enflurane and isoflurane, and ketamine, use of intrathecal (spinal) opioids, are some topics discussed in detail. Steps for epidural analgesia for labor pains includes treating hypotension aggressively if it occurs, maintaining patient in lateral position, and checking sensory level prior to every top up and confirming correct placement of epidural catheter prior to topup. Patients recovering from regional anesthesia also need supplemental oxygen because they may be sedated or hemodynamically unstable. Elevation of lower limbs augments venous return, and colloids and crystalloids can be given at the rate of 10-20 ml/kg in case of hypotension.
