Abstract

The greater omentum is a large peritoneal fold that develops from the dorsal mesentry which connects stomach to the posterior abdominal wall. It is a double sheet of peritoneum attached on the upper part to the stomach, folded on it and attached to the transverse colon. The part of the omentum below the transverse colon is called infracolic and the part above the transverse colon is called supra colic omentum. The blood supply to the omentum comes from the right and left gastroepiploic arteries. Omentum is made of vascularised adipose tissue which contains aggregates of leucocytes called milky spots. These immune aggregates are postulated to be responsible for trapping tumour cells and thus making omentum, one of the most common sites of metastasis of cancer ovary.
