Abstract

The period of adolescence is one of crucial turning point for a child growing up an adult. A lot of complex physiological and psychological processes come into play during this phase of the child\'s life. It has been termed as a window of opportunity to prepare for a healthy productive and reproductive life and prevent nutrition related chronic diseases in adult life. The nutritional needs increase in terms of energy and proteins. Similarly, the requirements of minerals and vitamins like calcium, iron and folic acid are also increased in view of the rapid growth and development of the child. Anemia is one of the commonest problems encountered in amongst the adolescent group, the chief cause being inadequate nutrition as a result of fault dietary habits. Therefore it is very important that right dietary habits are stressed upon this group of population right from early childhood; like discouraging consumption of junk foods, constant nibbling, prolonged television watching, maintaining regular meal timings etc. Some of the common nutrition related problems of adolescents are obesity, anemia, calcium deficiency, dental decay and even violent behavioral inclinations. Particular attention also needs to be focused on adolescents presenting with eating disorders like anorexia nervosa. Adolescents involved in sports activities also may need specialized diet which may be different from that of a non athlete.
