Abstract

Obesity of childhood is another spectrum of malnutrition among children. This phenomenon has been slowly and steadily rising in India over the past decade or so. The causes if this problem are extreme and rapid changes in life style, physical activity and diet that accompany urbanisation and rapid economic development. The degree of obesity is measured by a standard called basal metabolic index (BMI), which is calculated from the child\'s weight and height. The BMI for age, growth charts are available for both boys and girls referred to as the CDC growth charts which take into account the differences between body fat changes with age and sex of the child. Genetic factors, early feeding and metabolic factors, environmental and life style are some of the factors which form the pathogenesis of obesity. Obesity is assessed by factors like family history, lifestyle pattern, dietary history, anthropometry and laboratory investigations. Management of obesity among children comprises mainly counseling of parents along with the child, providing the right access to food, parenteral role and social or early learning. Physical activity and limiting television are also crucial means to curtail this problem.
