Abstract

The biochemical, haemodynamic, endocrine, and cytokinetic factors involved in the development of diabetic retinopathy are elucidated. This includes the biochemical pathways such as the polyol pathway, nonenzymatic glycation of protein, oxidative stress, and protein kinase C activation induced by hyperglycaemia. The other mechanisms involving changes in the red and white blood cells, plasma, vessel wall, and blood flow, the inflammatory mechanism, and genetic predisposition are described.
