Abstract

The aetiological factors dealt with in the previous chapter are recapitulated in the pathogenesis. The structural and functional changes in the blood retinal barrier, pericyte loss, capillary basement membrane thickening, loss of cellular elements from retinal capillaries, microaneurysm formation, retinal ischaemia, endothelial cell proliferation, retinal neovascularisation, and vitreous changes, are described. The different clinical lesions that constitute diabetic retinopathy are correlated with the histopathology findings.
