Abstract

Disorders of hairs and nails apart from posing cosmetic problems with psychological implications also guide the physician in identifying underlying diagnosis as they are easily affected in various pathological processes because they are rapidly growing structures. In this chapter, the various types of alopecia and their causes are discussed briefly with the help of photographs, with main focus on alopecia areata which is explained in much detail. A short note on hirsutism and hypertrichosis is given. The various abnormalities in the surface, color and shape of nail and their causes are depicted with photographs in the later part of the chapter.
