Abstract

This chapter focuses on the assessment of non-scholastic abilities of medical students. Non-scholastic abilities can be study-related such as knowledge, comprehension, application, drawing skills, originality, and creativity, social such as teamwork, leadership, and punctuality, communication-related, or interdisciplinary. The latest guidelines of MCI have put a great emphasis on the development of such abilities in students. Rating scales that include various attributes to be judged can be used to assess non-scholastic abilities of students. Rating scales can be completed by the teachers or even by peers. Communication skill is an important area which needs to be evaluated during undergraduate studies. At many medical schools abroad, audio and video recordings of a student’s interaction with patients and observation across a one way glass are commonly used. OSCE also provides a useful and reliable method for assessment of skills. Peer ratings, another type of evaluation, is being increasingly used at many medical school abroad. The rationale of using this approach is that a student is more natural in presence of his friends rather than his teachers. Peer rating system can be an important modality for the assessment of communication skills as well as other non-scholastic abilities.
