Pediatric Nursing

Children are major consumers of health care. They are large in number and vulnerable to various health problems. Majority of the childhood illnesses and death are preventable by simple low cost measures. Children always need special care to survive and thrive. Nursing personnel are key persons to provide preventive, promotive, curative, and rehabilitative care to children. The ever expanding demands of medical and nursing practice, emerging challenges in different aspects of child care, consumers’ demands, and improved technology have necessitated the highly specialized roles of pediatric nurse. The role of the pediatric nurse may vary from one health institution to others, but the basic responsibilities remain the same. Pediatric nurse have the responsibilities of providing nursing care in wellness and illness at home, community, school, clinic, and hospital or in any health facilities, where children and their parents or family have health care and counseling needs. Childhood illnesses are different than adult. Common health problems are related to low birth weight, malnutrition, infections, infestations, accidents, and behavioral problems. Important causes of hospitalization of infants and children include diarrheal diseases, acute respiratory infections, neonatal and perinatal conditions, congenital anomalies, tuberculosis, and other vaccine preventable diseases. Other medical conditions found in the pediatric units are mainly meningitis, encephalitis, hepatitis, nephritic syndrome, acute glomerulonephritis, malaria, typhoid fever, kala-azar, thalassemia, leukemia etc. Common surgical conditions are mainly related to congenital malformations, like trachea-esophageal fistula with esophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, ano-rectal malformations, neural tube defects, congenital heart diseases, etc. Other surgical conditions include intestinal obstructions, acute abdomen, road traffic accidents, burns, fractures, etc. This textbook on pediatric nursing deals with significant childhood diseases and disorders of different body systems. Common problems are described briefly with their etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic evaluations, medical and surgical management, nursing management and prognosis. Special emphasis is given on the chapters for care of newborn baby and care of healthy child during the period of growth and development. Preventive care of children is discussed as immunization, nutrition, and prevention of communicable diseases. Various health programs and welfare services are explained with basic information. So that well informed pediatric nurse should possess adequate knowledge to provide competent and quality care to improve all round development of the children.
