Diseases of the eye may be related to a variety of systemic disorders. Isolated eye problems are infections, trauma, congenital anomalies and vitamin deficiency. Common eye problems found in children are conjunctivitis, strabismus or squint, refractive error as myopia or hyperopia or astigmatism, childhood cataract, retinopathy of prematurity, congenital dacryostenosis, visual disorders as night blindness or color blindness or diplopia or amblyopia, and visual impairment or blindness. Problems of ear in childhood are most commonly found as otitis media, mastoiditis, foreign body in external ear, impacted cerumen (wax) and hearing impairment. Disorders of nose in children include congenital malformations like cleft palate and choanal atresia. Acquired problems of nose are found as rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal obstruction, foreign body in nose, trauma and epistaxis. Disorders of throat are identified as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, adenoidal hypertrophy, laryngo-tracheitis, epiglottitis, laryngomalacia and throat injury. Dental problems are seen as delayed eruption of teeth, malocclusions of teeth, and dental caries. Acquired abnormal conditions of oral cavity are mainly, stomatitis, oral thrush, gingivitis, aphthous ulcer etc. Congenital problems of oral cavity include cleft lip, cleft palate, tongue tie, macroglossia etc. All these problems should be identified promptly for appropriate management in time.
