Abstract

A handicapped condition makes the normal functions of the individual very difficult and leads to dependency. These problems are increasing day by day due to changing lifestyle and complicated environment. It is a social problem needs special approach to reduce the number and related consequences. Diseases and injury lead to impairment and disability which result to handicapped conditions. These conditions can be classified into three groups, i.e. physically handicapped, mentally handicapped and socially handicapped. Major causes of handicapped conditions in children are congenital anomalies, genetic disorders, perinatal conditions, poliomyelitis, accidental injury and malnutrition. These conditions can be prevented by improvement of maternal health and adequate care during pre-conceptional and perinatal period along with preventive health care during infancy, childhood and adolescence. Curative management and rehabilitation with multidisciplinary approach are also very important approach for all handicapped children. Special attention should be given for the welfare of the underprivileged children like handicaps, orphans, street children, working children, delinquents, etc. The children are the future citizen of the nation. So, child health problems need to be managed and prevented carefully with prime importance. Thus, child welfare should be the vital responsibility of the country in all levels to have healthy children and healthy nation.
