Abstract

This chapter deals with the most common general paediatric surgical anomalies seen in day to day paediatric practice. Cleft lip and palate are among the most common of congenital deformities. The development of the six branchial arches is discussed. The first branchial cleft cysts are divided into two types: I and II. Type I cysts are located near the external auditory canal. Type II cysts are associated with the submandibular gland or found in the anterior triangle of the neck. The second branchial cleft accounts for 95% of branchial anomalies Third and Fourth branchial cleft cysts are extremely rare. The diagnosis and treatment for thyroglossal duct cyst is described. Common hernias like umbilical ,paraumbilical hernia, inguinal hernia hydrocele are discussed. Common abdominal surgical conditions include Intussusception and choledochal cyst are discussed in detail. Bilirubin metabolism and causes of surgical jaundice like Biliary Atresia are important to understand the spectrum of neonatal jaundice.
