Abstract

This chapter gives and overview of paediatric dentistry aimed principally at the medical practitioner. An overview with regard to the formation, structure and number of teeth is given along with average dates of tooth eruption for both the primary and permanent dentitions. Anomalies which deviate from the normal form and eruption of teeth are discussed to assist the reader in identifying abnormal presentations. Dental caries is described in relation to its aetiology and means of prevention. Aspects of oral medicine and oral pathology are described in relation to lesions of the oral soft tissues and underlying bone along with viral, bacterial and fungal conditions affecting the orofacial region. The chapter contains a section dealing dentoalveolar trauma, its causes, characteristics and management. The final section of the chapter looks at the oral manifestations of systemic diseases.
