The management of paediatric emergencies is a key skill required by any paediatrician. This chapter aims to provide the reader with an overview of the generic management of common emergencies before discussing in more detail key management points related to specific conditions. The chapter commences with a brief discussion of important differences between adults and children followed by an examination of the basic structured approach to management of emergencies including recognition of the sick child and prevention and management of cardiac arrest. Specific conditions covered in more detail include sepsis, diabetic ketoacidosis, seizures, respiratory emergencies and trauma and burns.
