Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by derangement in carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism caused by the complete or relative insufficiency of insulin secretions and/or insulin action. Two major types of diabetes, one associated with insulin deficiency called Type-I or insulin–dependent diabetes mellitus and the other associated with insulin resistance called Type-2 or Noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Type-1 is associated with a specific and complete loss of pancreatic b-cells. Type-II diabetes is the most common type and is associated with obesity, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance may be due to the defect at receptor level or at the post-receptor level. This defect may be in the effector cell or in the b-islet cell causing insulin resistance.
