Abstract

The heart is a four chambered hollow, muscular organ located in the center of thorax where it occupies the space between lungs (mediastinum) and rest on diaphragm. It is normally the approximate size of a fist. Weigh almost 300 gm. Heart weight and size are influenced by age, gender, body weight, extent of physical exercise and conditioning and heart disorder. The heart pumps blood to the tissue supplying them with oxygen and other nutrients. Because of the prevalence of cardiovascular disease around the nurses practicing in any setting must be capable of assessing the cardiovascular system accordingly takes care of them. Then chapter covers key components of assessment includes a health history, physical examination and monitoring of a variety of laboratory and diagnostic test result. An accurate timely assessment of cardiovascular function provides the data necessary to identify nursing diagnosis, formulate an individualized plan of care, evaluate the responses of the patient to the care provided and revise the plan as needed. An understanding of the structure and function of the heart and in disease is essential to develop cardiovascular assessment skill. This chapter also discusses some important disorders and conditions like Hypertension, coronary artery disease, Angina pectoris. Myocardial infraction. Shock, cardiogenic shock, Heart failure. Arrhythmias, Dysrhythmias, Inflammatory heart disease, infective endocarditis Rheumatic heart disease, Valvular heart disease-Mitral stenosis Aortic stenosis, etc. Vascular problems arterial occlusion disorders, Buerger’s disease. Venous disorders-Varicose viens, Venous stasis ulcer, etc. Each disorder discuss with their etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestation, diagnostic evaluations, treatment and nursing management accompanying with nursing care plans and related procedures.
