The Dermatological system or integumentary system is the largest body organ and composed of skin, hair, nails and glands. The skin is further divided into two layers the epidermis and dermis. The largest organ system of the body, the skin is indispensable for human life-Skin forms a barrier between the internal organs and external environment and participates in many vital body functions. The skin is contiguous with mucus membrane at the external openings of the digestive, respiratory and urogenital systems. Because skin disorders are readily visible, dermatologic complaints are commonly the primary reason that a patient seeks health care. Skin disorders are encountered frequently in nursing practice. Skin also acts as a barrier against invasion by bacteria, Viruses and excessive water loss. The fat of the subcutaneous layer insulate the body and provide protection from trauma. This chapter covers the assessment of integumentary system and also discusses some disorders of the system which includes parasitic infections, fungal infection. Bacterial infections, Impetigo, Folliculitis viral infections Herpes simplex, Herpes zoster, Verruca vulgaris, warts; contact dermatitis, urticaria, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, Acne, Pemphigus vulgaris, tumors of the skin and burns. Each disorder presented with their etiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestation, diagnostic studies treatment and nursing management and nursing care plans for special condition.
