Abstract

The visual system consist of the external tissues and structures surrounding the eye the external structures (eyebrows, eyelids, eyelashes, lacrimal system, conjunctiva, cornea, sclera and extra ocular muscle), the internal structures (iris, lens, ciliary body choroid and retina). The entire visual system is important for visual functions. Light reflected from an object in the field of vision passes through the transparent structures of the eye and in doing so is refracted (bent) so that a clear image falls on the retina. From retina the visual stimuli travel through the visual pathway to the occipital cortex, where they are perceived an image. Visions contribute meaning and pleasure to human response. They eye is a sensitive highly specialized sense organ subject to various disorders many of which leads to impaired vision. Impaired vision may affect a person’s independence in self care, work and life style choices, sense of self-esteem, safety, ability to interact with society and the environment and overall quality of life. The auditory system is composed of peripheral auditory system (external, middle and inner ear) is concerned with reception and perception of sound. The inner ear function is hearing and balance and central system (the brain and its pathway) integrated and assigns meaning to what is heard. The sense of hearing is essential for normal development and maintenance of speech as well as the ability to communicate with others, balance or equilibrium is essential for maintaining body movements, position and co-ordinations. This chapter addresses the assessment ad management of disorders of visual system and auditory system including diagnosis, studies. Disorders of visual system includes visual impairment, eye infection and inflammation, eye trauma and injury, glaucoma, cataract, retinal detachment, strabismus, Eye tumors, etc. and disorders of auditory system includes hearing impairment, otosclerosis, Mastoiditis, Otitis media, Acoustic neuroma, Meiners disease, other vestibular disorders. Each disorder presented with their etiology pathophysiology, Clinical manifestation and nursing management with certain procedure relation to certain condition.
