Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is the persistent elevation in right sided heart pressures and is classified as primary (PPH) and secondary PH. This chapter elucidates the definitions, pathophysiology, etiology, clinical features along with an algorithm for further diagnostic testing. Secondary PH due to hypoxemia is the most prevalent cause and is managed by treating the underlying etiology and oxygen. The management of PPH on the other hand is more complex and a schema for treatment is proposed although such patients will more likely benefit from referral to a centre specializing in this entity. Recent advances in the treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension are also discussed.
