Abstract

This chapter discusses disaster management. “A disaster is an occurrence such as hurricane, tornado, storm, flood, high water, wind-driven water, tidal wave, earthquake, fire, explosion, volcanic eruption, building collapse, transportation wreck, or other situation that causes human suffering or creates human needs that the victims cannot alleviate without assistance”. The disaster is a global phenomenon and no country is spared from the disaster, whether natural or manmade. The first step in the disaster management program is, to assess the situation. Assessment is a crucial management task which contributes directly to effective decision making, planning and control of the organized response. Disaster prevention is related to the long term activities, formulation and implementation long range policies and programs.
