Abstract

This chapter discusses foreign bodies in the aerodigestive tract, which is a serious and challenging condition, especially in children. A foreign object in the airway will remain inside the body until it is removed. Foreign bodies may be organic or nonorganic. Organic materials usually incite an intense inflammatory reaction around them. Nonorganic objects like metal coins or bands are usually inert and may not cause any tissue reaction. Oganic bronchial foreign bodies tend to swell up in the airways as well as incite an inflammatory reaction around them. Foreign body aspiration should be suspected when the subject has an acute choking episode or severe cough with respiratory distress. Imaging may be helpful in making a diagnosis. Hoarseness is a common symptom of a foreign body located in the larynx. In most cases requiring hospital admission, a carefully planned endoscopic removal of the object under direct vision is the safest form of management.
